Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for women is primarily used to manage the symptoms of menopause, which occur as a result of declining levels of estrogen and progesterone. HRT helps replenish these hormones to alleviate symptoms and improve overall quality of life. It’s also used in some cases for women who experience premature menopause or those who have had their ovaries removed.

At Anti- Aging & Regenerative Associates, we offer a variety of treatment options for HRT including pills, patches, creams, injections, or pellets, and the treatment plan is personalized based on individual needs and health conditions.

Why Women Use HRT

There are many reasons why women consider HRT but, in our experience, the key reasons are:

Relieve Menopausal Symptoms: Hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings/irritability, and sleep issues.

Prevent Osteoporosis: After menopause, the reduction in estrogen can lead to bone density loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Estrogen is important for maintaining bone health, so HRT can help reduce this risk.

Protect Heart Health: Estrogen has a protective effect on the cardiovascular system, and some studies suggest that HRT may help reduce the risk of heart disease in younger women (under 60) who are recently postmenopausal.

Improve Sexual Health: Low estrogen levels can lead to vaginal dryness and discomfort during intercourse. HRT can help restore vaginal moisture and elasticity, improving sexual function.

Manage Early Menopause: Women who experience premature menopause (before age 40) due to surgery or other health conditions may benefit from HRT to replace the hormones that are no longer being produced by the ovaries.

Hair Loss: Women experiencing hair loss due to hormonal imbalances—such as those caused by menopause, postpartum changes, or conditions like PCOS—may find HRT beneficial in restoring hormonal balance. By rebalancing estrogen and progesterone levels, HRT can help regulate the hair growth cycle and minimize the effects of androgens on hair follicles.

Considerations and Risks

While HRT can provide significant relief, it also comes with potential risks. Some individuals may not be suitable candidates for HRT or TRT, particularly those with a current or past history of:

  • Breast Cancer: Long-term use of HRT, especially combined estrogen and progesterone therapy, may increase the risk of breast cancer
  • Blood Clots: HRT can increase the risk of blood clots, potentially leading to deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE).
  • Stroke: There may be a higher risk of stroke, especially for older women or those who begin HRT later in menopause.
  • Heart Disease: For some women, particularly those starting HRT after age 60, there may be an increased risk of heart disease.
  • Endometrial Cancer: Women with a uterus using estrogen-only HRT may face a higher risk of uterine cancer, which is why progesterone is typically added to the treatment.

If you are thinking about HRT, call and make an appointment with one of our board-certified providers who can assess your individual risks and needs. They’ll consider your personal health history, family history, and the severity of your symptoms to help determine if HRT is the right option for you.
