The Science and Skincare Benefits of Microneedling
Microneedling is an aesthetic procedure involving the use of a handheld device that creates controlled micro-injuries to the skin by penetrating the upper dermal layers with tiny sterile needles.
The goal of the procedure is to stimulate the body’s natural healing response which induces the production of collagen and elastin (your skin’s support structure), resulting in firmer, smoother skin. The tiny micro-channels also provide an access point that allows serums and creams to penetrate deeper into the treated area with better absorption.
Microneedling Can Be Combined With Other Technologies
At Anti-Aging & Regenerative Associates, we often combine microneedling with other technologies, such as platelet-rich plasma® (PRP) therapy, to maximize the anti-aging benefits of the treatments.
PRP is extracted from a small sample of your own blood drawn at treatment using a medical device to separate the plasma from the rest of your blood. PRP contains growth factors that work to tighten sagging skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles and is applied after microneedling, supercharging the process for optimal results.
Who Can Benefit From Microneedling Treatment?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved microneedling devices in patients aged 22 years and older and recommends you have the treatment administered by a healthcare provider trained in microneedling.
While the process is considered safe and suited for most skin tones and skin types, it may not be ideal for you if you take certain medications or have health conditions, including:
- Have had radiation therapy recently
- Are immunosuppressed
- Have active acne
- Have open wounds
- Have Keloid scarring
- Are immunosuppressed
- Certain skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea
- Other health concerns or medications with contraindications
We always discuss the benefits and risks of our treatments with our patients and can provide advice about alternative treatments if microneedling is not suitable for you.
What Can I Expect From the Process (Does it Hurt)?
While having thousands of ultra-fine needles piercing your skin may be offputting, in reality, microneedling is minimally invasive and causes minimal discomfort. We can even apply a topical numbing cream beforehand if you prefer. The process can be split into four stages as follows:

Preparation and Treatment
Having cleansed your skin, we can apply a numbing cream to reduce any discomfort during the treatment. After the numbing takes effect, the microneedling session typically takes between 30 minutes and an hour; however, this can be longer or shorter depending on your treatment plan.

Aftercare
To get the best from each session, we always advise our clients to follow good aftercare practice, which includes:
- Avoid alcohol for the first week as it dehydrates the body.
- Avoid smoking as it drastically slows the body’s healing process.
- Keep your skin hydrated with products that soothe, hydrate, and provides nutrients, and drink plenty of water.
- Skip abrasive products such as exfoliators until the skin has healed.
- Avoid activities that cause you to sweat, such as the gym or sauna for at least 24 hours.
- Don’t use makeup until your skin is properly healed.
Our team is always on hand to provide advice and guidance if you have any questions.
Are There Any Side Effects?
After a microneedling treatment, side effects are minimal and can include skin redness, inflammation, mild bruising, or minor signs of puncture wounds which typically resolve within 48 hours with appropriate aftercare.
How Often Can I Have Microneedling?
Many patients see visible results after a single treatment; however, the effects are subtle to begin with and can vary from person to person. Therefore, several sessions are recommended to achieve more intense, longer-lasting results. In most cases, a course of three to five treatments provides optimal results, with further maintenance sessions every six to nine months after that.
